Attractions in the Parish of Portland, Jamaica

There are 14 parishes in Jamaica. Let us examine some interesting locations which are attractions in the parish of Portland.

Portland is known for its lush green vegetation and better than average rainfall. It has beautiful white sand beaches and famous rivers and beauty spots. A very low crime rate makes it the perfect getaway for the rich and famous.

Rio Grande River

The Rio Grande raft experience is a two hour river ride on local bamboo made rafts guided by expert raftsmen along the Rio Grande. If you love water and adventure, you'll have the best time of your life riding along the Rio Grande River. Feel free to wear your swim suit so you can take a dip in the water.

Late afternoon is the best time to take this trip down the river. You can enjoy seeing the locals go about their daily tasks like fishing or washing clothes on the rocks. You can also buy souvenirs from vendors along the way.

Nonsuch Caves

Take a three hour tour of one of the area's most well-known caves called Nonsuch Caves. It's filled with some of the most interesting rock formations including stalactites and stalagmites. The guided tours follow a lighted path so you won't miss a thing. The cave is 1,500,000 years old and also contains fascinating Arawak Indian artifacts.

Boston Village

Boston Village is famous for its delectable jerk pork and chicken. Boston is the former home of the famous actor Errol Flynn.

Long Bay

This is an enchanting little town with 1. 5 miles of sparkling white sand beach and is ideal for swimming and snorkeling as well as surfing.

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is an enchanting deep blue spot with a legend which claims it is bottomless. A famous restaurant is on locations and there are several villas in the area.

Somerset Falls

This is a quaint series of Waterfalls formed from the Daniel River's progression to the sea. Have fun negotiating the falls.

Folly Ruins

The Ruins of Mitchell's Folly, a crumbling Mansion built at the beginning of the 20th Century. It was built from concrete and sea water which resulted in its early rot. It is on the outskirts of Port Antonio and is ideal for hiking.

Frenchman's Cove

A secluded cove famous for its picturesque location and white sand beach. It has its own natural stream emptying into the pristine waters of the Caribbean Sea. An unspoilt natural beach, perfect for relaxation.

Reach Falls

Secluded picturesque waterfalls. It is just 3 miles east of Manchioneal. This is where the Drivers Rivers empties into a cascading whirlpool. Reach Falls is popular for its abundant green foliage.
